My Curly Hair Routine & Favs

Hi!! This is probably my most requested post across my social media sites. Anyone that has curly hair or has attempted to tame curly hair knows the amount of work and different products that it takes to maintain healthy curls. And it can be semi overwhelming for someone looking for products to take care of their hair. Similar to our skin, one hair product does not work for a hair types or all curly hair. While in the process of trying new products pay attention to how your hair responds to it. Do you curls feel more bouncy? Does it look fuller? Is there more or less frizz? Are your curls weighed down? Do they feel more moisturized or dryer than normal?

These are the questions that I usually ask myself when trying out a new product. Also, there are a lot of products that will give your hair an instant boost and lose it’s “magical” effect after one or two uses. Watch out for those signs. They might be great initially, but your hair may not favor that product or becomes used to it rather quickly, no longer benefiting from it qualities. In the process of finding new hair care brands I like to give it about 3-4 weeks of steady use. It is the only way I will know if I genuinely like a product. I also like to minimize the amount of other products that I use around that time to give it a fair chance to work and penetrate into my hair.

I’m currently in the process of switching over to completely cruelty free products and naturally infused brands. That post should be up in about a month for all individuals interested. However, since this post has been so highly requested, I decided to do it before introducing a host of new products. Most of these have been in my routine for years. I have been a curly girl all of my life and I’ve played around with my share of products. These are the ones that I constantly rebuy and would recommend to others.

Shampoo and Conditioner:

There is a lot of back and forth behind whether curly girls should or shouldn’t use shampoo when they wash their hair. Personally, I still shampoo my hair but not nearly as much as other hair types. The balance that I found works best with my hair is co-washing. That basically means that every other week I will shampoo and condition my hair by only using conditioner. Shampoo is known to clean the hair but also strips the oil and moisture from you hair making it drier if you use too much. For that reason, I skip the entire shampoo process every other time I was my hair and simply mimic the shampoo process with conditioning products.

Organix Hydrating Macadamia Oil Shampoo and Conditioner

This is the product that I have been using for the longest time. My hair has always loved this particular formula and it has been my go to for years. I rotate my formula every 3 months or so, so that my hair doesn’t get completely used to one formula and it can benefit from the ingredients. I find that my hair always feels really smooth after using this product.

Organix Macadamia Oil Conditioner is great for dry and brittle hair.  This product contains macadamia oil, bamboo extract and sugar cane extract which moisturize and soften the hair.

From this line I have tried: Coconut Milk, Macadamia Oil, Awapuhi Ginger and Argan Oil of Morocco. All of which have worked great for me.

Organix Repairing Awapuhi Ginger Shampoo and Conditioner

I picked this one up after realizing I had some split ends that I needed to work on. Curly hair does have the tendency to tangle easier and sometimes snap off during the process of untangling. Now, this is no miracle product but my stylist did notice that I have barely any split ends after a few months of using this product.

Organix Awaphui Ginger Conditioner penetrates the hair shaft to repair and helps deal with frizziness. Regularly trimming your ends is also important. Some people suggest doing it every 3 months. Personally, I trim my ends every 5-6 months. If you take care of your hair in between trims, you can cut it fewer times a year but this is simply my opinion and what you think is best for your hair should be your routine. I don’t think cutting your hair will make it grow faster, but it will help it grow stronger and maintain a better length.

Curls Coconut Curlada Conditioner

$_12

The coconut conditioner is a super hydrating, rinse out conditioner. This conditioner softens, detangles, moisture and hydrates your curls. Coconut is a fatty source of nutrients and helps battle dryness in own’s hair. It will leave your hair super soft and silky with regular use. I like to use this product in replace of my regular conditioner in place of my shampoo.

Garnier Sleek & Shine Leave-In Conditioner

500-2

This has been my holy grail leave in conditioner for years. I apply a good amount on this product daily. I usually hydrate my curls with water first and apply this product to define my curls, to give them some of their life back while battling frizz. I recently found a product that I like equally as much as this one, but with more benefits. I will be sure to let you guys know about it in a few weeks. But overall, I think this is a solid product. It is infused with Argan Oil From Morocco & Apricot and it a product that I especially love during the hotter months. It keeps my curls tamed on hot summer days.

Farashé Hair Creme

FARASHE-1_large

Farashé is a nourishing hair creme made with Argan Oil, Coconut Oil and Olive Oil and honey. This product has transformed my hair. I like to use it about once a week for a extra hair boost. It can also be used as a daily conditioner or as a hair mask. The product does have a slight hold which is nice for the days that your curls need a bit more definition. And the natural ingredients are a bonus for me!

Curls Blueberry Bliss Curl Control Jelly

This is the newest edition to my hair routine. I was intrigued by all of the benefits that blueberry is confirmed to have on curly hair. Blueberries are rich in Vitamin C and B complex which increase hair growth. It also prevents hair breakage and slows down hair loss. Whenever I applied this product I noticed that it didn’t weigh my hair down, but instead gave it an extra lift without causing it to fizz. It is similar to a light gel hold without causing flaking. Overall, I think it’s an amazing product and great addition to the curly product world.

Camille Rose Naturals Fresh Curl
FreshCurlSmoother__67336.1407628513.386.513
This was one of the first products that I used from Camille Rose and I instantly fell in love with it. Fresh Curl is a daily hair lotion that will have your hair smelling delicious and feeling great. Just a small amount goes a long way. Although it can be used at any point in between washes,I prefer to use it immediately after washing my hair and after my hair looks like nothing can be done to save it. It bring my hair back to life even after a week of frizz and neglect.
Camille Rose Naturals Jansyn’s Moisture Max Conditioner
JansynsConditioner__28767.1407628517.1280.1280
Although this product isn’t advertised as a deep conditioner, that is exactly has I use it. It is a super rich conditioner mixed with vitamins to regenerate cells for growth.  I apply this product from root to tip, wrap my hair is a plastic cap and letting it soak in for about 10-15 minutes before washing it out. My hair is always left feeling super quenched and bouncy. I repeat this process about twice a month.

Organix Hydrating Macadamia Oil Intensive Moisture Mask

500

This is a great option for hair that is really dry but your schedule doesn’t allow you to receive a professional deep conditioning treatment. I apply it while I am in the shower and let it sit for about 5 minutes before washing it out. In such a short time, it will not completely transform your hair but it will definitely help with some of the dryness. The ingredients are similar to the shampoo and conditioner: macadamia oil, sugar cane extract and bamboo extract.

Pure Argan Oil

shopping

Argan oil is one of those products that I can’t live without. I have never been a fan of overly greasy hair, but I don’t mind a light sheen. Argan oil makes your hair shiny, soft and silky. Especially with continued use. I generally mix this product with a bit of leave in conditioner, but you can also apply this product alone. It helps to fight frizz in humid climates or in the warmer months.

I didn’t add a link for this product because they can be found in your local supermarket or by a simple online search. My only suggestion is to find a PURE Argan oil. For example, I prefer the Argan Oil that can be added to your food. If you are not able to get your hands on Pure Argan Oil, beauty supply stores also sell them but they may be added or cut down with another product or ingredient.

I hope that this post was helpful to the people interested in curly hair maintenance. These are just some of the products that I love and I’ve seen an improvement in the overall texture and health of my hair. There are tons of difference cocktails of products that can work for you, but it really comes down to a process of trial and error, listening to your curls and consistency. When you curls need moisture, they will feel dry. Just pay attention to your hair’s needs and deal with them accordingly. Sometimes it may be frustrating, but the internet is a great tool. Read reviews and try things that may satisfy your specific needs.

For those interested make sure to stay tuned for more hair posts and curly hair treatment recipes. If there is something that you would like more information on or something that wasn’t addressed in this post. Please let them below. I will be sure to get to you all of questions.

  1. Thank you, thank you! I always see recommendations for hair, but they’re never for curly hair like mine. I will be sure to try some of these products. I have been using Diva curls but my hair is just so dry now. Switching products every once in a while makes sense! Thanks again, and please keep posting for curlers!
